Avedon was one of the first photographers I ever learned about, he is world famous and amazing, etc.
I just saw his work in a fuller context, and it's amazing. It's not just emotive portraits against white backgrounds, or ladies next to elephants. He was journalist too, among other things.

SL project room
I worked around the SL gallery site a little tonight. Everyone should take 1/2 hour in the next couple days to cruise around the space a put up a picture in one of the frames. Let's populate this first with some of our flickr pics just to see what it looks like. It will also take some practice to figure out how to map the image onto the frame without warping it...we might have to figure out the proportion and put borders around our images.
So let's all try to put 1 image up over the next week....we do have to figure out a way to put up this show too. Remember, the more access to viewers the better!

Today's dose of Introspect
Careful not to amputate any limbs, I remove my subjects from their realities. I cut up my photos, questioning the value of a solid, physical print. I know I have another copy if I mess up, but I want to get it right on first try.
My visions grow like children, unpredictable and adapting with every action. I notice how pointed a chin is as a cut a figure out of a wall, thereby making a two dimensional object present in third. It is still "flat," the leg of my model is still on the same paper as the arm, and yet it speaks, it has presence, it is free from it's original environment.
I concentrate on sensation. Where does the cut-out belong on a canvas or wooden plank? I question, what good is a meaningful piece if I do not enjoy its creation? Enjoyment is participation. Participation is meaningful. Yet, it seems too important to get it perfect for what it is. Does important undermine enjoyment? No. It will have meaning regardless; the harder I try to make it meaningless, the more meaning it will have. I will concentrate on aesthetics, for I want to see beauty.
What do I want? I want to see what I have yet to see and I am the only person who can provide myself with something "new."
Day 1, Image 1 (not there yet + struggle + face paint)

Day 2, Image 2 (Simple, for now. Waiting for mask. She almost fisted an apple, but that's just vulgar, so no. Maybe a brief stop motion animation. )

Day 2, Image 1 (Moving along fant-ass-ticly !)

Goal for end of next week: to have both wooden pieces finished, lacquered, drying, footage shot, and stop motion recorded so that I can order a printed book. It seems doable if I give up all rights to sleep...but my project is about dreams and sleep is research! What's a girl to do?
I notice that the more I try to simplify by deciding to do "something less instead," the more I end up completing the original idea and the "something less instead."

Just a thought!
So sitting at my internship just thinking about the show and started thinking about the "walls" made of foam-core.
Maya and I, for anyone who didn't hear, are planning on playing with the idea of fabric, both to section off our area (to prevent spill light from the room) and on the wall we are hanging from (for her to project onto and for my window boxes to peek through).
Just wanted to throw that out there for anyone who wasn't aware of what we were doing because it may come in handy for someone else's section as a good alternative to building walls with foam-core, it is relatively inexpensive and might look nicer compared to the foam-core flats we are given (although most are supposed to be in pretty fine condition). In addition, because of the piping on our ceiling, we would have relatively little problem hanging fabric.
It may also be a nice way to tie together the room though we are sectioning off areas, and depending on what fabric, create a different, lighter, more open feeling to the space than the tall, stiff foam-core.
